French-Cypriot Military Pact Takes Effect, Expanding Defense Cooperation
According to reports, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides confirmed the activation of the agreement through posts on his official social media accounts.
In his remarks, Christodoulides said the accord supports broader European efforts aimed at enhancing the European Union’s strategic autonomy and strengthening its defense capabilities.
The agreement follows discussions held during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the Greek Cypriot administration on April 23, after which negotiations between the two sides led to the finalization of the pact.
Under the terms of the SOFA, French military personnel and assets may be stationed in southern Cyprus under specific circumstances. According to reports, the arrangement establishes the legal basis for French forces to operate from the island in support of activities across the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The accord also gives France access to military facilities and infrastructure located in southern Cyprus.
According to reports, the agreement further includes measures related to defense technology cooperation, joint military exercises, and ongoing strategic consultations between France and the Greek Cypriot administration.
